Offering firefighter certification to offenders

FORSYTH, Ga. – On April 13, Smith State Prison hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the grand opening of Fire Station #20. The fire station currently has four inmate firefighters who will serve and assist local fire departments in Tattnall and Long counties; and the city of Glennville.

“We are proud to now offer this program at Smith State Prison,” said Commissioner Bryson. “Not only does this allow for offenders, who participate in this program, the opportunity to become certified career firefighters once released, it also offers communities additional residential and commercial fire protection.”

The GDC Inmate Firefighter program was established in 1963. The program provides fire protection to state property and 51 local counties and cities surrounding 25 state and county prisons. Inmates who participate in this program receive certification through the Georgia Standards and Training to become firefighters. NPQ FF1 and 2 Certification Level includes, Introduction to Fire Science, Fire Fighting Strategy and Tactics, Fire Prevention and Inspection, EMT/First Responder, Safety and Loss Control, and Hazardous Materials. The certification that these firefighters receive will allow them to be hired as career firefighters once released. A total of 50 former inmates, have been hired following release and now work as career firefighters. Check out GDC fire services program for more information.

Future plans for Smith State Prison Station, will be to add four more inmate firefighters as well as increase locations that they provide fire protection service.

“Thank you to the city of Glennville and Tattnall and Long counties for your support of this station,” said Commissioner Bryson. “With your help, we will have the ability to offer these men a bright future once released.”

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
