More than 2,500 IDs Issued to Returning Citizens

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Transitional Services, in collaboration with the Department of Driver Services (DDS), are are now able to provide offenders a DDS Identification Card (ID) or DDS renewed Driver’s License (DL) to returning citizens upon their release.  As of  January 2018, over 2,500 ID’s and Driver’s Licenses have been issued. 

“We strive to provide returning citizens with as many opportunities as possible to support their reentry back into society,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. "Through this partnership, we are able to assist our offenders with obtaining the necessary documents to begin their new lives.”  

This partnership was designed to provide a “universally accepted” state identification card to all returning citizens. Phase one encompasses those offenders who have previously been issued a Secure ID with DDS and have valid facial and signature images on file. Phase two will encompass those offenders who have not yet been issued a Secure ID, but have valid facial and signature images on file at DDS.  Finally, phase three will encompass those who have not yet been issued a Secure ID and do not have valid facial and signature images on file with DDS.  The necessary documentation for phase three participants will be obtained through the use of the DDS propriety devices.
