FORSYTH, Ga. – On November 29, Jackson County Correctional Institution hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Welding Program. In attendance were Governor Nathan Deal, Senator Frank Ginn, GDC Executive Leadership, County Commissioners and Lanier Technical College Leadership & Staff. Governor Deal spoke to the audience about reducing recidivism and reforming those that have made mistakes.
“Our partnerships are an essential component of how we begin to cut down on recidivism,” said Commissioner Dozier. “Working together for a common purpose allows us an opportunity to help the rehabilitation process begin for our offenders.”
The Welding Program is a collaboration with Lanier Technical College and WorkSource Georgia. After an extensive qualification process the offenders will enter the 10-week Program. This will allow the offenders to obtain a Certificate of Welding Qualification Record through the American Welding Society. The goal of the Welding Program is to give offenders a skill that they can take into the workforce to obtain gainful employment and become successful citizens.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
