To be displayed at the Governor’s Mansion

FORSYTH, Ga. – On November 1, the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) presented First Lady Sandra Deal and Governor Nathan Deal with Georgia courthouse replicas to adorn rooms within the Governor’s Mansion as holiday decoration for this year’s season.

Mrs. Deal was presented with five courthouse replicas, representing the counties of Glynn, Colquitt, Dekalb, Monroe, and Lumpkin.

“It is really incredible how the offenders in our system can create such amazing artwork out of just cardboard and wood scraps from around the facility,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier.  “Any way that we can help offenders give back to the community is a great opportunity.”

Many of the courthouse replicas have unique stories behind them. For instance, the Glynn County courthouse replica was handmade entirely of wood, by an offender from Ware State Prison.  In a handwritten letter, he described how it took 553 hours to build the massive piece of art. Meanwhile, the Monroe County and Dekalb County courthouse replicas were made from cardboard gathered from around Walker State Prison.

On December 3, First Lady Deal and Governor Deal will kick off holiday tours at the Governor’s Mansion at the annual tree lighting and reveal of this year’s holiday decorations.

“These offenders should be proud of the fact that their time and skills will contribute to a historic and educational tour for the citizens of Georgia,” said Commissioner Dozier.
