13 receive GEDs, 8 receive OJT certificates

FORSYTH, Ga. – On October 16, Turner Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) Center hosted a joint graduation ceremony at the facility located in Sycamore, Ga. There were 13 men who received their GED, and eight who received OJT (On-the-Job Training) certificates.

“We celebrate the accomplishments of these hard-working men who obtained a new certification this week,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “As they near release, they are now better equipped to gain employment, reducing their chance of recidivism.” 

The GED program provides educational services to offenders who did not complete their high school education prior to incarceration. Students must pass tests in four basic subject areas: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

OJT programming provides offenders the opportunity to earn a technical certificate while employed on a work assignment. The graduates participated in various programs, including: Food Preparation, Store Clerk, and Supervisor Aide.

The six-month RSAT program has four phases. Phase one: orientation; phase two: active phase; phase three: re-entry; and phase four: exit phase. The program targets high-risk offenders nearing release who struggle with substance abuse issues.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
