Long Unit Hosts Ceremony

FORSYTH, Ga. – On April 28, eight offenders received their General Education Diploma (GED) at Long Unit (an annex of Smith State Prison) in Ludowici, Ga.

“Education is a key step in the success of offenders reentering society,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “These eight offenders can now further their education, through vocational and post-secondary programs.”

The GED program at Long Unit delivers services to offenders who did not complete their high school education prior to incarceration. Students must pass tests in four basic subject areas to acquire their GED: Mathematics, Reasoning through Language Arts Part 1 and Part 2, Science and Social Studies. The GED tests at Long Unit are administered by Coastal Pines Technical College in Jesup, Ga.

A total of 18 graduates have earned their GED at Long Unit this year.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
