Ronnie Bynum promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Ronnie Bynum to Superintendent of Smith Transitional Center (TC) and Women’s Probation Detention Center (PDC) effective April 1, 2017. Bynum will be responsible for overseeing 41 staff members and 234 minimum-security male detainees at Smith TC, and 46 staff members and 211 minimum-security female residents at Women’s PDC, both in Claxton, Ga.

“Ronnie has served the Department and Macon State Prison well for over 20 years,” said Commissioner Dozier. “His experience will be of great benefit, as he transitions into his new leadership role as Superintendent.”

Bynum began his career with the department in 1996 at Smith State Prison (SP) as a Correctional Officer. During his tenure at Smith SP, he served as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Chief of Security. In 2015, Ronnie was promoted to Assistant Superintendent at Smith SP, where he currently serves.

Bynum has completed the following departmental training, Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Professional Management Program (PMP), Sergeants Academy, and Basic Counselor Training. He is also a veteran with over 20 years of military experience.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
