GDC Criminal Investigations Unit Uncovers Mastermind

FORSYTH, Ga. – On May 17, DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James announced indictments for members of the Sex, Money, and Murder gang in a 2014 homicide. Among those indicted was Valdosta State Prison inmate Kenneth Jackson, who used a cell phone within the facility to mastermind the crime.

“This is another example of how dangerous cell phones are in the hands of inmates,” said GDC Commissioner Homer Bryson. “We remain proactive and diligent in our efforts to track down illegal cell phone use and seek prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”

Working closely with law enforcement partners at Federal, State and local levels, the GDC Criminal Investigations Unit uncovered the gang activity of inmate Jackson and presented the information to DeKalb County officials.  “These valued partnerships across all law enforcement agencies help ensure the safety of the public in our great state,” added Bryson.

Contraband, in particular cell phones, pose a significant threat to staff and public safety. During the first quarter of 2016, GDC confiscated a total of 1,197 items of contraband from within prison facilities across the state.
