James E. Herron Promoted

 FORSYTH, GA -- Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the promotion of James E. Herron to Deputy Warden of Security at Rutledge State Prison, effective March 1, 2016. Herron will be responsible for supervising and managing over 100 security staff at the facility housing over 600 medium security male inmates in Columbus, Ga.

“Herron has dedicated 17 years of service to the Georgia Department of Corrections,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “The leadership skills he possesses will greatly impact the staff and inmates of Rutledge State Prison.”

Herron began his career with the Department in 1999 as a Correctional Officer at Macon State Prison. During his tenure at Macon State Prison, he served as TACT Squad Assistant Commander, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. He transferred to Rutledge State Prison in 2005, as Lieutenant and TACT Squad Commander. In 2009, Herron was promoted to Captain, where he most recently served.

Herron has an Associate degree in General Studies and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. During his career with the Department, he has completed the following training courses: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Peace Officer Standards and Training Instructor Training (POST IT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), and Corrections Leadership Institute (CLI).

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
