Equipped with New Technologies

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the opening of a new GED classroom at the Augusta Transitional Center. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on February 24, 2016 in Augusta, Ga. The new classroom is equipped with new technologies, which will assist the residents in their education. These technologies include 10 new Google Chrome books as well as a Promethean Smart board.

“Providing our offenders the ability to learn through the use of technology, is the future of our academic programming,” said Commissioner Bryson. “Augusta Transitional Center is the first of our centers to offer its residents the use of Google Chrome books. We look forward to expanding these capabilities to all of our centers this coming year.”

The new devices will offer both McGraw-Hill and Kahn Academy resources, which will prepare residents for the GED test. Additionally, these devices will provide resources for Adult Basic Education and Literacy/Remedial Reading students. For students who work during conventional classroom hours, these devices will offer them the capability to access online resources in the evening hours. In addition to the Google Chrome books, instructors and students will be able to utilize the newly installed Promethean ActivBoard, which blends a dry erase board with an interactive computer projection screen.

“Both staff and residents at Augusta Transitional Center are excited about the new technology and appreciate the instructors’ dedication to the education mission,” said Superintendent Scott Wilkes. “All those involved are looking forward to an increase in GED graduations over the next few months.”

Augusta Transitional Center supplements online learning with their part-time facility teacher, a part-time teacher from Augusta Technical College, and two community volunteer tutors.
