New Chief Probation Officer Named For Western Judicial Circuit

Cindy Murphy Promoted
Forsyth - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the promotion of Cindy Murphy to Chief Probation Officer for the Western Judicial Circuit effective July 16, 2013. Murphy will be responsible for the oversight of 16 staff members and the supervision of felony probationers in the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit.
"Cindy is a dedicated employee who has excelled within the Department," said Commissioner Owens. "I am confident her knowledge and experience will serve her well in her new role."
Murphy began her career with the Department in 1989 at the Savannah Probation Office where she served as a Court and Field Officer. In 1992, she transferred to the Athens Probation Office and has served as a Court, Field, Field Training, IPS and SPS officer. She was promoted to Probation Officer III in 2009 where she most recently served. She received her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Georgia Southern College and has completed Basic Management Training, Advance Management Training and Pre-Command. She is currently enrolled in Corrections Leadership Institute.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
