John Mayes to Serve as Chairman
Forsyth - The Georgia Department of Corrections Board of Corrections elected John Mayes as Chairman of the Board.
Mayes, of Adairsville, was appointed to the Board by Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2004 and reappointed by Gov. Perdue in 2008 and in 2013 by Gov. Nathan Deal. He represents the 14th Congressional District.
"John brings great leadership and experience to our Board," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "I look forward to working with him as Chairman."
Mayes is the owner and founder of Pro Systems Clean Care. He also serves on the Floyd County Commission, as Chair of the county's Public Safety Committee and on the Board of the Georgia Film, Video and Music Advisory Commission. He received his undergraduate degree from Albany State University.
The Board of Corrections consists of 18 members and members are appointed by the Governor to staggered five year terms. The Board develops rules governing the employees under its authority and the offenders coming under the Department's custody.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
