Tarmarshe Smith Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Tarmarshe Smith, Deputy Warden of Security at Smith State Prison, to Warden at Calhoun State Prison, effective October 1, 2018. As the Warden, Smith will be responsible for overseeing approximately 253 staff members and 1,677 medium security male offenders.

“Smith has shown great dedication and leadership skills in each position he has held with the Department over the last 16 years,” said Commissioner Dozier. “We look forward to his continued growth and leadership in his new role as Warden at Calhoun State Prison.”

Smith began his career with the Department in 2002 as a Correctional Officer at Georgia State Prison. During his tenure at Georgia State Prison, he served in the following positions: Canine Handler, Sergeant, CERT Sergeant, Security Threat Group (STG) Investigator, Lieutenant, Tactical Squad Assistant, Tactical Squad Commander, Captain, Major and Unit Manager. In 2016, Smith was then promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Smith State Prison where he currently serves.

Smith holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Public Safety Leadership from Mercer University and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree. He has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Advance Management Training (AMT), Professional Management Program (PMP), Sergeants Academy, and Warden’s Pre-Command, as well as STG Investigator Training. Smith also attended the National Institute of Corrections training and Adjunct Auditor training.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
