New Deputy Warden of Security Named at Walker State Prison

Lavon Martin Promoted
FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the promotion of Lavon Martin to Deputy Warden of Security at Walker State Prison (SP) effective December 1, 2016. As Deputy Warden, Martin will be responsible for supervising and managing 86 security staff and more than 400 medium security male offenders.
“With over 26 years of experience, Lavon is an invaluable asset to the Department,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “I am confident in his ability to effectively manage both security staff and the offenders at Walker State Prison.”
Martin started his career with the Department in 1990 as a Detail Officer at the Colquitt County Correctional Institution. In 1992, he transitioned to Hays SP as a Correctional Officer. He was promoted, in 1996, to Sergeant at Hays SP. In 2001, he became the CERT Sergeant at Hays SP, and served in this capacity until 2008, when he was promoted to Lieutenant. In 2013, Martin was promoted to Captain at Walker SP, where he currently serves.
Martin has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), POST Instructor Training (POST IT), and the Professional Management Program (PMP). He is a certified Adjunct Instructor in Specialized Firearms and Defensive Tactics and a veteran of the United States Army.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
