Tommy Coffee Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Tommy Coffee, to Deputy Warden of Security at Burruss Correctional Training Center (CTC), effective March 16, 2018. As the Deputy Warden, Coffee will be responsible for overseeing 184 staff members, 808 medium security male offenders consisting of adults, juveniles and a probation boot camp. 

“Coffee has dedicated over 25 years of faithful service to the department,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier.  “His knowledge and experience will greatly benefit the staff and offenders at Burruss Correctional Training Center.”

Coffee began his career with the Department in 1993, as a Correctional Officer at Rivers State Prison.  While at Rivers State Prison, he served on the Middle Georgia Correctional Complex Tactical Squad and was promoted to Sergeant and Lieutenant.  In 2008, he left to fulfill his military duties, and upon his return in 2015, he was transferred to Burruss CTC, where he was promoted to Lieutenant that same year.  In 2016, he was promoted to Captain at Central State prison, and in 2017, he was promoted to Unit Manager at Burruss CTC, where he currently serves. 

Coffee holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Phoenix.  His departmental training consists of: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), Sergeants Academy, Supervision 1, 2 & 3, and Management 1, 2, & 3.

Coffee proudly served in the United States Army for 26 years, retiring with the rank of Command Sergeant Major.  He completed four combat tours to include Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan.  He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Afghanistan. 

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
