Betsy Thomas Appointed

FORSYTH, Ga. – Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the appointment of Betsy Thomas as Human Resources Director of Corrections Human Resources Management effective May 1, 2016. As Director, Thomas will be responsible for human resource management programs and functions including recruiting and retention, compensation, hiring policies, awards and recognition and staff professional development for the largest law enforcement agency in the state.

“The decision to appoint Betsy to HR Director was an obvious choice,” said Commissioner Bryson. “In her brief tenure as Deputy Director, she has already made significant strides toward improving processes in our central HR unit.”

Thomas began her career with GDC in 1994 as a Probation Officer in the Dublin Judicial Circuit.  She worked her way through the ranks, and was promoted to Chief Probation Officer of the Oconee Judicial Circuit in 2010, followed in 2014 by a developmental assignment in Central Office, where she was responsible for the implementation and opening of 17 Day Reporting Center (DRC) Lite sites across the state.  Later that year, she was promoted to Field Services Manager, having oversight of specialized training programs for Probation Operations, the Probation Reporting Contact Center and the Day Reporting Centers. In May 2015, she was appointed to Deputy Director of the Human Resources department at central office, where she currently serves.

Thomas earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Mercer University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University. She is a certified POST Instructor.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
