Wilcox State Prison Hosts Graduation Ceremony

FORSYTH, Ga. – On January 26, 25 offenders received their General Education Diploma (GED) at Wilcox State Prison (SP) in Abbeville, GA. Since July 1, 2016, a total of 31 offenders have received their GED at Wilcox SP, and 52 are currently enrolled in GED classes.

“Many employers require a minimum of a high school diploma or a GED,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “A GED opens the door for these 25 men, providing an increased chance of employment when they return to society.”

The GED program at Wilcox SP provides educational services catered to offenders who did not complete their high school education. Students must pass tests in four basic subject areas to acquire their GED: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. The tests at Wilcox SP are administered by Wiregrass Technical College.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
