Jimmy Sikes Honored with Legacy Award

FORSYTH, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) awarded recently retired Spalding County Prison Warden and former GDC employee, Jimmy Sikes, with the Legacy Award at the 11th Annual GDC Awards ceremony on July 7 at the State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth, Ga.  The Legacy Award

“Jimmy has been a vital part of the transformation of Corrections,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “His legacy will continue on through the many lives he touched and mentored.”    

The Legacy Award is presented to an individual who has committed a lifetime of service to the Department and has throughout the years made significant contributions to the agency. 

Sikes dedicated 32 years to the Department of Corrections, starting his career as a Correctional Officer at Georgia State Prison. During his career, he moved up the ranks from Sergeant, to Lieutenant, to Captain, to Deputy Warden, to Warden, and to Regional Director. Sikes retired as Regional Director in 2004, then accepted a position with Spalding County Prison to serve as their Warden. Sikes recently retired as Warden in January 2015.

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 guests.  Making the award presentation with Commissioner Homer Bryson were Assistant Commissioner of Administration & Finance Scott Poitevint, Assistant Commissioner of Facilities Division Timothy C. Ward, and Board of Corrections Chair Rose Williams.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
