Contraband Arrests at Multiple State Prisons
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 1,427 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
On August 2 at Smith State Prison, a person was observed in the wood line area of the facility. A search found civilian Joseph Vaughn with the following contraband: cellphones, cellphone charger cords, tobacco, cigar packs, a crystallized substance. Civilian Vaughn was arrested by the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 31 at Hancock State Prison, 2 civilians were spotted near the wood line of the facility. They were identified as Todd McGrew and Courtney Cones. A search of the civilians and the area were conducted, and the following contraband was found: cell phones, methamphetamine, marijuana, tobacco, internet hot spot, clothes, shoes, alcohol, cologne, chargers, headphones, wrapping paper, razors and cigarettes. The civilians were arrested by Hancock County Sheriff's Office and transported to Hancock County Jail.
