Contraband arrest

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 831 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.

On June 24, Dooly State Prison Officer Tahvien Dewberry was arrested after he entered the facility with contraband. After Officer Dewberry reported to his assigned post, he appeared to be nervous and a supervisor was called to the building. When the supervisor arrived in the building, Officer Dewberry ran into the restroom where 280.2 grams of tobacco was discovered in the trashcan. After strip-searching Officer Dewberry, 278.5 grams of tobacco were also discovered on his person. Dooly County Sheriff’s Department made contact and Officer Dewberry was placed under arrest. Officer Dewberry was charged with violating oath and crossing guard lines with contraband.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
