Gregory Sampson Reassigned

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the reassignment of Gregory Sampson, Warden at Macon State Prison (SP), to Warden at Metro Reentry Facility (RF), effective January 16, 2026. As Warden, Sampson will be responsible for overseeing staff members and approximately 355 medium and minimum-security male offenders at the special mission facility. In addition, oversight of the Metro complex consisting of Metro Transitional Center (TC), Atlanta TC and Clayton TC will fall under Sampson’s responsibility.

“Gregory has been a dedicated and dependable leader while upholding the GDC mission for 19 years," said Commissioner Oliver. "We are confident his vast correctional knowledge will help ensure success for both the staff and offenders at Metro Reentry Facility."

Sampson began his career with the department in 2006 as a Correctional Officer at Rutledge SP, and in 2013, he was promoted to Sergeant. In 2014, he transferred to Clayton Transitional Center (TC) as a Sergeant, and during his tenure there, he was promoted through the ranks of Chief of Security and Assistant Superintendent. In 2020, Sampson was promoted to Superintendent at Phillips TC, and in 2021 he transferred to Clayton TC as Superintendent. In 2021, he was promoted to Assistant Warden at Central State Prison (SP) and was then promoted to Warden at the same facility. In 2023, Sampson was promoted to Warden at Dooly SP, and in 2025, he was promoted to Warden at Macon SP, where he currently serves.

Sampson holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Florida Metropolitan University and is pursuing a bachelor's in cybersecurity from the American Military College. His departmental training consists of Basic Correctional Officer Training, Tactical Squad Training, Sergeant’s Academy, Correctional Emergency Response Training, Supervision I, II, and III, Management I, II, and III, and Warden's Pre-Command.
