Desmond Cofield Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. –  The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of Desmond Cofield, Assistant Superintendent at Metro Reinvestment Center, to Deputy Warden of Security at Rutledge State Prison (SP), effective January 16, 2026. As Deputy Warden of Security, Cofield will be responsible for overseeing security staff members and 590 male offenders.

“Desmond has gained a wealth of knowledge during his 20-year tenure with the agency,” said Commissioner Oliver. “We are proud to have him as a part of our team and are confident that he will continue to excel as he takes on his new role as Deputy Warden of Security at Rutledge SP.”

Cofield began his career with the GDC in 2005 at Charles Hudson Transitional Center (TC) as a Correctional Officer, and in 2009 he was promoted to Sergeant. In 2015, he stepped away from Corrections but shortly thereafter in 2017, he joined Rutledge SP as a Sergeant. During his tenure at Rutledge SP, he served as the Facilities Tactical Squad Commander, and was later promoted to Captain.  In 2023, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent at the Metro Reinvestment Center, where he currently serves. 

Cofield’s departmental training consists of Basic Correctional Officer Training, Tactical Squad Basic Training, Sergeant’s Academy, Lieutenant’s Academy, Basic Management Training, Deputy Warden’s Academy, Initial Correctional Counselor Training, Management I, II, and III, and Assistant Superintendent Academy.
