New Warden at Valdosta State Prison
Curtis Carter Promoted
FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of Curtis Carter, Warden at Autry State Prison (SP), to Warden at Valdosta SP, effective July 16, 2025. As Warden, Carter will be responsible for overseeing staff members and approximately 1,184 male offenders.
"Curtis’ leadership experience and work ethic have proven to be an invaluable asset to the agency," said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. "We are confident that his correctional knowledge and unwavering dedication will prove beneficial as he begins his journey at Valdosta SP."
Carter began his career with the GDC in 1996 as a Correctional Officer at Lee SP. During his tenure at Lee, he was promoted to CERT team and K9 Unit as a Sergeant. In 2008, he transferred to the Special Management Unit CERT team. In 2010, he transferred to Georgia Diagnostic Classification Prison, where he rose through the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, and Major. In 2019, he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Burruss Correctional Training Center, and in 2024, he was promoted to Warden at Autry SP, where he currently serves.
Carter received his Associate of Arts degree from Seward County Community College. His departmental training consists of Basic Correctional Officer Training, CERT Basic Training, Hostage Negotiation Training, Basic Management Training, Advanced Management Training, Supervision I, II, and III, Management I, II, and III, Professional Management Program through Columbus State University, Deputy Warden's Academy, and Warden's Pre-Command.
