Janet James Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. –  The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of Janet James, Unit Manager at Rutledge State Prison (SP), to Assistant Superintendent at Columbus Transitional Center (TC) effective July 16, 2025. As Assistant Superintendent, James will be responsible for assisting the Superintendent with the daily operations of the facility, overseeing staff, and supervising approximately 139 male residents.

"Janet has demonstrated remarkable professionalism while working her way up through the ranks," said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. "We are confident she will continue to uphold the values and mission of the agency while taking on her new role as Assistant Superintendent."

James began her career with the department in 1997 as a Correctional Officer at Macon SP. During her tenure at Macon SP, she was promoted to Sergeant and Lieutenant. In 2009, she transferred to McEver Probation Detention Center as a Sergeant, and in 2016, she transferred to Columbus TC. Later that year, she was promoted to Lieutenant at Rutledge SP, and in 2024, she was promoted to Unit Manager, where she currently serves.  

James is currently pursuing a degree in criminal justice from Columbus State University. Her departmental training consists of Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Professional Management Program through Columbus State University, Sergeant's Academy, and Supervision II and III.
