Curtis Johnson Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. –  The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of Curtis Johnson, Chief Counselor at Calhoun State Prison (SP), to Deputy Warden of Security at Calhoun SP, effective May 16, 2025. As Deputy Warden of Security, Johnson will be responsible for overseeing security staff members and 1,664 male offenders.

“Curtis has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities during his twenty-nine-year tenure with the agency,” said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. “We are confident that he will continue to uphold the GDC mission as he takes the next step in his correctional career.”

Johnson began his career with the GDC in 1996 at Autry SP as a Correctional Officer, and in 2005, he joined the Tactical (TACT) Squad. In 2007, he was promoted to Sergeant, and in 2013, he became the CERT Team Sergeant. In 2014, he transitioned to a Counselor, and in 2016, he was promoted to Senior Counselor. Later that year, he was promoted to Chief of Security at Albany Transitional Center (TC), and upon the closure of the TC, he transferred to Calhoun SP as a Senior Counselor. In 2023, he was promoted to Chief Counselor, where he currently serves. 

Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in management from the University of Phoenix and a diploma in criminal justice from Albany Technical College. Johnson’s departmental training consists of Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Counselor Training, Chief Counselor Training, Sergeant’s Academy, TACT Squad Basic Training, Supervision Training, and Chief of Security Training. Johnson retired with twenty-six years in the Georgia National Guard, completing multiple tours while serving.
