Corrections Leadership to Serve with the American Correctional Association
Jay Sanders Elected
FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) announced Jay Sanders, Assistant Commissioner of GDC’s Inmate Services Division has been elected to serve on the American Corretional Association’s (ACA) Delegate Assembly as a Delegate for Institutions (Adult). More than 150 delegates constitute the assembly including at-large representatives from every 16 components of the correctional system. The Delegates study proposed policies to ensure the documents are clear and concise and effectively communicate ACA’s Principles and Vision as well as the collective will of the Delegate Assembly.
“As the accrediting body for corrections agencies across the nation, the ACA sets the standards we should all strive towards and we are honored to serve and represent our correctional colleagues as we share in our collective commitment to public safety,” said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver.
Sanders began his career with GDC in 1992 as a Probation Officer. His past roles include Regional Training Coordinator, Hearing Officer, Public Safety Training Instructor and Special Assistant to the Director of Probation Operations. In his role as Deputy Director – Reentry Services Unit with the Department of Community Supervision, Sanders helped lead the state’s initiative on prisoner reentry as well as manage several large grants that were awarded to assist in this effort. Sanders was appointed by Governor Deal to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council as a citizen member in 2013, and in 2015, he was appointed to the Juvenile Justice Statewide Advisory Group. In 2016, Sanders was appointed to Assistant Commissioner of Inmate Services Division, where he currently serves.
Sanders is a POST Certified Master Instructor with certifications in Firearms and Defensive Tactics. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Pensacola Christian College, and a Master’s degree in Social Administration from Georgia Southwestern State University.
