James Spann Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Tyrone Oliver announced the promotion of James Spann from Warden at Lee State Prison (SP) to Warden at Ware State Prison effective October 16, 2024. As Warden, Spann will be responsible for overseeing all staff members and approximately 1,433 male offenders.

 “James has been an exceptional leader and dedicated staff member throughout his 20-year career with the GDC,” said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. “We appreciate his dedication and look forward to his continued success in his new position as Warden at Ware SP.”

Spann began his career with the Department in 2004 as a Counselor at Autry State Prison. In 2009 he was promoted to Chief Counselor at Calhoun State Prison, and in 2015 he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment at Wilcox State Prison. In 2020, he was reassigned to Autry State Prison as Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment, and in 2021, he was promoted to Warden at BCTC. In 2023, he was reassigned to Lee SP, where he currently serves.

 Spann received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Albany State University and a Master of Arts in Public Safety and Public Administration from Cappella University. He has completed the following departmental training: Basic Management Training, Advanced Management Training, Correctional Leadership Institute, National Institute of Corrections Auditors Training, Executive Basic Correctional Officer Training, and Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment Academy.
