New Beekeeping Program continues to flourish

FORSYTH, Ga. – On March 23, 12 inmates at Smith State Prison received their Beekeeper Certification. All were required to take a written and practical exam. There was 100% accuracy on the practical exam and no offender scored below 92% on the written portion.

“This is a great accomplishment for these offenders and the beekeeping program as a whole,” said Commissioner Bryson. “Not only did all who were tested certify, but they did so with a phenomenal level of accuracy.”

The University of Georgia (UGA) administered the exam and during the practical portion, the inmates named the parts of a beehive, detailed the various cells in a honeybee frame, and demonstrated entering active hives.

This was the second certification test administered by UGA at Smith State Prison. This program is not only located at Smith State Prison but also at Lee Arrendale, Dooly and Ware State Prisons.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
