Commissioner: Homer Bryson
Director of Public Affairs: Joan Heath
Graduates honored
FORSYTH, Ga. –A graduation ceremony was held on January 21, for 10 inmates housed at Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Ga. The ceremony was to honor these inmates, who completed the GED program offered at the facility.
“We are making amazing strides towards educating our reentry citizens and offering them tools needed to be successful when they reentry to society,” said Commissioner Bryson. “We could not be where we are without our hardworking and dedicated education staff.”
The GED is a 12-month program that measures ones ability in science, mathematics, social studies, reading and writing. Inmates, who do not meet the criteria for the Charter School program, are afforded the opportunity to earn a GED in lieu of a high school diploma.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
