FORSYTH, Ga. –  The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) honored Special Agent Jonathan Spires, Canine Handler Michael Turner, and Canine Handler Brock Turner, as Investigator and Canine Handler of the Year at the 15th Annual GDC Awards ceremony on September 24 at GDC headquarters in Forsyth, Ga.  Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 400 guests. Making the award presentation with Commissioner Timothy C. Ward were Alton Russell, Board of Corrections Chairman, Christopher Clark and Donnie Pope, Board of Corrections, and John Richey, Deputy Director Office of Professional Standards.

“Special Agent Jonathan Spires and Canine Handlers Michael and Brock Turner have worked relentlessly to combat the introduction of contraband into facilities,” said Deputy Director John Richey.  “Their dedication, commitment and bravery clearly demonstrate our mission of keeping facilities safe and secure.”  

Special Agent Jonathan Spires and Canine Handlers Mike and Brock Turner have devoted their daily efforts in combatting the introduction of contraband. The trio has prevailed in preventing countless items aside from the usual marijuana, tobacco, and cell phones from entering the facility, including items that directly undermine the safety and security of not only the institution, but also the public.

The award recognizes a GDC agent, canine handler or investigator involved with significant cases, received special achievements, displayed leadership, acts of valor or heroism and outstanding service in the community.
