FORSYTH, Ga. –  The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) honored Dorcas Moore of Women’s Probation Detention Center (PDC), as Education Teacher of the Year at the 15th Annual GDC Awards ceremony on September 24 at GDC headquarters in Forsyth, Ga.  Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 400 guests. Making the award presentation with Commissioner Timothy C. Ward were Alton Russell, Board of Corrections Chairman, Christopher Clark and Donnie Pope, Board of Corrections, and Assistant Commissioner Jay Sanders.

“Mrs. Moore cares about her students and is committed to their success inside and outside of the classroom,” said Assistant Commissioner Jay Sanders “Her unlimited dedication, patience and compassion allow her students an opportunity to thrive.”

Mrs. Moore is a thirty-year educator and Reading Specialist, who has the skills and ability to reach students who struggled in school, or who have lacked motivation to learn. Her compassionate, but demanding, style of teaching has enabled many women to obtain their GED, as well as build their confidence and self-respect.

The award recognizes a certified GDC or contract employee who is dedicated and knowledgeable; who inspires students; who is respected and admired by students, facility, and colleagues, and who plays an active role in the facility, as well as the school.
