Carl Betterson Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Timothy C. Ward announced the promotion of Carl Betterson to deputy warden of care and treatment at Coastal State Prison (SP) effective July 1, 2019. As deputy warden of care and treatment, Betterson will oversee the supervision of educational programs, health services, library services, counseling programs, recreational services and the mental health services of approximately 1,870 medium-security-male offenders at the facility.

“Betterson has proven himself to be a knowledgeable and dedicated leader within the department,” Ward said. “We are confident that his expertise in care and treatment will serve him well in his new role.”

Betterson began his career with the State of Georgia in 2008, as a Child Protective Services Investigator and Workflow Manager with the Department of Family and Children Services. Betterson joined the GDC in 2014 as a general population counselor at Autry SP. In 2016, he was promoted to chief counselor at Rutledge SP and in 2018, he was promoted to assistant superintendent at Columbus Transitional Center, where he currently serves.

Betterson holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Corrections from Albany State University.  He is pursuing a Certified Public Manager certification through the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia. Betterson has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training and Supervision I, II, and III.
