Inmate Death Being Investigated as Apparent Suicide

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is investigating the death of an inmate at Macon State Prison in Oglethorpe, Ga., as a suspected suicide.

On April 24, at approximately 5:40 a.m., Correctional Officers found inmate Darren Rawls (GDC#1132104) unresponsive in his cell.  Emergency Medical Services were called and life saving measures were performed.  Rawls was pronounced deceased by the coroner at approximately 7:00 a.m.  GDC is conducting an investigation into the death, as standard procedure. 

Rawls was sentenced to fifteen years in 2015, in Dekalb County for Aggravated Assault, Armed Robbery and Hijacking a Motor Vehicle.
