Mark Smith Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Mark Smith to Deputy Warden of Security at Georgia State Prison, effective April 16, 2018. As the Deputy Warden, Smith will be responsible for overseeing 467 security staff members and 1,537 close security male offenders.

“With Smith’s 16 years of correctional experience and his security background, we are confident that he will be a valuable asset to Georgia State Prison,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “We are thankful for his dedication and look forward to his continued success with the agency.”

Smith began his career with the Department in 2002 as a Correctional Officer at Rogers State Prison, where he was also a member of the Georgia State Prison Tactical Squad. In 2007, he transferred to Smith State Prison where he served as a member of the Smith State Prison Tactical Squad and Correctional Emergency Response Team. In 2011, he was promoted to Sergeant at Georgia State Prison. Later, Smith was promoted to Lieutenant at Montgomery State Prison in 2013, and within the same year, was promoted to the Office of Investigations and Compliance Internal Investigations Unit as an Institutional Investigator, assigned to Smith State Prison.  In 2015, he was promoted to Special Agent with the Office of Professional Standards/Criminal Investigations Division, where he currently serves.

Smith has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Supervision I, II, and III, Management I, II and II, Firearms Instructor Training, Basic Law Enforcement Academy, GBI Basic Agent Academy and Deputy Warden’s Academy. He is currently enrolled in the Professional Management Program (PMP) and will graduate this year.
