Six Offenders Graduate from program

FORSYTH, Ga. – On January 18, six offenders from the Floyd County Prison graduated from the General Education Diploma (GED) program in the facility’s first ever graduation ceremony. The prison partners with Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) to provide instruction and testing.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for these six offenders and we are very proud of them for completing the program,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “We are very thankful for a great partnership with GNTC in affording offenders the opportunity to obtain their GED.”

During the ceremony, Dr. Sarah Allred, Associate Professor of Sociology at Berry College, who leads the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program (Think Tank) addressed the graduates. Dr. Allred encouraged the graduates to remember, among other things, to be caring, organized, wise, and scholarly. A GED graduate stated, “I never expected it to be this nice, my family is so proud of me, and I think I want to go to technical college now.”

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
