Partners with Foothills Education Charter High School

FORSYTH, Ga. On October 17, Phillips State Prison (SP) hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Foothills Education Charter High School hosted at the facility located in Buford, Ga. State Representatives Timothy Barr, Emory Dunahoo, and David Clark, Board of Corrections member Carl Franklin, GDC Executive Leadership, and Foothills staff attended the momentous event, celebrating the third GDC facility to host a Charter High School.

“We are excited to celebrate the grand opening of the Phillips State Prison Foothills Education Charter High School,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “We are thankful for our partners at Foothills who continue to work with us to improve the lives of our offenders, by giving them a second chance at a high school diploma.”

The ceremony opened with words of encouragement and excitement from GDC and Foothills leadership. Following the cutting of the ribbon, guests were able to tour the facility and meet with the students.

The Foothills Education Charter High School program officially opened in September of 2015 at Lee Arrendale SP in Alto, Ga. The second was established in 2016 at Burruss Correctional Training Center in Forsyth, Ga. Prior to 2015, GDC could only provide offenders GED programming. Now, GDC has the ability to offer offenders, under the age of 21, the chance to obtain a high school diploma through the partnership with Foothills.
