Pulaski State Prison hosts graduation ceremony

FORSYTH, Ga. – On July 13, Pulaski State Prison (SP) hosted a graduation ceremony to recognize 31 women who received their GED, and 66 women who received vocational certificates in Business & Customer Service, Design & Media Production, Plumbing, Veterinarian Assistant, and Culinary Arts.

“Nearly 100 women participated in Pulaski State Prison’s largest graduation ceremony on July 13,” said Commissioner Dozier. “We commend these women for their hard work, and thank our dedicated staff for continuing to guide and support them in their efforts.”

At the event, The valedictorian recognized one security and one non-security employee with the agency’s Golden Apple Award, for their exemplary efforts in helping the offenders earn their diplomas. The security winner was Sergeant Sirena Jackson and the non-security winner was Deputy Warden Remika Christian.

The GED program provides educational services catered to offenders who did not complete their high school education prior to incarceration. Students must pass tests in four basic subject areas to acquire their GED: Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

Vocational programming is provided through a partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia, who certify and deliver programs, and provide certificates to offenders who complete related coursework. Pulaski partnered with Central Georgia Technical College to certify offenders in the following programs: 18 in Business & Customer Service, 16 in Design & Media Production, 16 in Culinary Arts, 15 in Plumbing, and one in Veterinarian Assistance.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
