Melvin Butts Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Melvin Butts to Deputy Warden of Security at Pulaski State Prison, effective July 16, 2017. As Deputy Warden, Butts will be responsible for supervising and managing 147 staff members and 1,223 of medium security female offenders.

“Melvin has dedicated 20 years of service to the Department,” said Commissioner Dozier. “The knowledge and experience he has gained in his career, will greatly benefit that staff and offenders at Pulaski.”

Butts began his career with the Department in 1997 as a Correctional Officer at Pulaski State Prison (SP). In 2001, he was promoted to Sergeant and was later promoted to Lieutenant in 2005. He was then promoted, five years later, to Captain/Chief of Security. In 2015, he was placed on developmental assignment and served as Assistant Statewide PREA Coordinator with the Office of Professional Standards Compliance division in Central Office, where he most recently served.

Butts completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Facility Inspector’s Training, Basic Management Training (BMT), Professional Training Program (PMP), Advanced Management Training (AMT), and Witness Statement Analysis Training.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
