FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) officials, in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death of an inmate at Dooly State Prison in Unadilla, Georgia.

Slyricus Xavier Winder, 38, was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 2:40pm on Wednesday, February 22.  Medical staff immediately began performing life saving measures, and EMS personnel arrived to assist.  At 3:13pm, Winder was pronounced dead.  The body of inmate Winder was transported to a state crime lab for an autopsy.

Winder was serving an 18 year sentence for aggravated assault, with a maximum release date of June 2020.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
