Valdosta partners with Wiregrass Technical College

FORSYTH, Ga. – On June 16, Valdosta State Prison held their first GED graduation in four years. Ten offenders were recognized for completing their education and another four were listed as graduates in absentia. The graduates recited quotes, offered testimonials, and shared their plans for the future.

“This was a landmark event for Valdosta and we are very proud of the 14 offenders who completed the program,” said Commissioner Bryson. “Their hard work will provide great opportunities for success upon release.”

The 12-month GED program measures an individual’s aptitude in science, mathematics, social studies, reading and writing. Valdosta partnered with Wiregrass Technical College to make the program possible. Wiregrass arranged for their staff members to be onsite to proctor the exams and provided instruments to help encourage offenders until they were ready to take their exams.

The guest speaker at the graduation was Mrs. Amy Carter, Georgia House Representative for District 175.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
