Graduation held at Coastal State Prison

FORSYTH, Ga. – Each Wednesday, Coastal State Prison hosts a graduation for the offenders and detainees enrolled in their Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) Program. This month, a total of 19 offenders and nine detainees graduated at the facility located in Garden City, GA. The nine detainees were released back into society following the ceremony.

“Coastal State Prison offers a highly structured RSAT program that boasts great success,” said Commissioner Bryson. “This year, 78 offenders and 25 detainees have completed the program.”

This nine month, four-phase program is located in 11 dorms across Coastal State Prison, which the facility refers to as communities.  The program promotes recovery from both addiction and crime, and addresses the behavioral challenges of incarcerated individuals that are exacerbated with alcohol and drugs.

The four phases of the program are Orientation phase, Active Treatment phase, Re-Entry phase, and Relapse Prevention phase. Each phase is nine weeks long.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
