Virginia Taylor Lee of Gainesville Honored

FORSYTH, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) awarded Virginia Taylor Lee of the Gainesville Probation Office with the Cynthia Floyd Award at the 11th Annual GDC Awards ceremony on July 7 at the State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth, Ga. 

“The Department is honored to recognize Virginia for her commitment to providing treatment to the state’s population of mental health offenders,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “Her dedication is evident both in the agency and in her community.”

The award was created to honor Cynthia Floyd-Rolle for her exceptional humanitarian acts and personal sacrifice beyond the call of duty.  Ms. Floyd-Rolle served as a Probation Officer for more than 15 years, until her tragic death in 2001.

Virginia served as a Counselor for the Gainesville Day Reporting Center until she transferred to the Department of Community Supervision on July 1, 2015. She is not only an asset to the center, but to the local community. She successfully streamlined the Section 8 housing application to the extent that participants are afforded interviews with a 24-hour time period. As a result many applicants are receiving funding and obtaining housing within 72 hours.

As a community supporter, Virginia adopts families in need in the area during the holidays and is an active Volunteer and Placement Specialist with the Golden Retriever Rescue. Her passion for rescuing animals often leads her from state to state when necessary. She personally funds these projects by working other jobs such as outside counseling and tutoring of high school students. She is recognized as the epitome of service before self and paying it forward.

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 guests.  Making the award presentation with Commissioner Homer Bryson were Assistant Commissioner of Administration & Finance Scott Poitevint, Assistant Commissioner of Facilities Division Timothy C. Ward, and Board of Corrections Chair Rose Williams.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
