National Correctional Officer Week, May 3-9, 2015

FORSYTH, GA. — Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) will honor its Correctional Officers the week of May 3-9, 2015 in recognition of National Correctional Officer Week. A proclamation, signed by Governor Nathan Deal, was presented by Commissioner Homer Bryson to a group of Correctional Officers at the Joint Law Enforcement Board Meeting in Glennville on April 16.

“The brave men and women who stand on the front lines across the state of Georgia, protecting the public, staff and inmates on a daily basis deserve recognition for their dedication and sacrifice to our mission of running safe and secure facilities,” said Commissioner Bryson. “I have a great deal of respect for these courageous men and women and the tremendous work they do under the most challenging of situations.”

The agency currently employs more than 6,100 correctional officers statewide at 31 prisons, 10 residential substance abuse treatment facilities, two integrated treatment facilities, 13 transitional centers, and one parole detention center.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
