New Warden Named at Metro Atlanta Complex

Steven Perkins Appointed
Forsyth - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Steven Perkins as the Warden of the Metro Atlanta Complex which includes the Atlanta, Metro and Clayton Transitional Centers and the Helms Medical Facility effective July 1, 2013.
"Perkins is a great mentor and leader here at the Department," said Commissioner Brian Owens. His experience and knowledge will benefit staff and offenders at Atlanta Transitional Center."
Perkins began his career with the Department at the Atlanta Diversion Center in 1989 as a Correctional Officer. In 1991, he was promoted to Sergeant at Larmore Probation Detention Center (PDC) and accepted a position as a Probation Officer in 1998 at the center. He later became a Counselor at Larmore PDC and in 2005 transferred to Clayton Transitional Center. In 2010, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent at Helms Transitional Center and then was promoted to Superintendent in 2011 where he most recently served. Perkins has completed Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Probation Officer Training, Basic Management Training and POST IT. He has a Bachelor's degree in Corrections from Langston University.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
