Darrell Clark Appointed

Forsyth - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Darrell Clark as the Superintendent of Helms Medical Facility effective July 1, 2013. The facility is located in Atlanta, Georgia. As Superintendent, Clark will be responsible for overseeing 62 staff members and 64 special mission security male and female inmates.

"Clark has worked his way up through the ranks since joining the Department 24 years ago," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "I am confident Helms Medical Facility will benefit from his leadership and years of experience."

Clark began his career with the Department as a Correctional Officer in 1989 at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2003 and to Lieutenant in 2005. In 2006, he was promoted to Unit Manager at Metro State Prison and later transferred in 2011 to Phillips State Prison in the same capacity for the Atlanta Medical Center. Clark is a graduate of Griffin Technical College and has a degree in Criminal Justice. He attended Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Professional Management Program, Advanced Management Training and Correctional Leadership Institute. Clark plans on returning to college this fall to further his education.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
