2013 Cynthia Floyd Award Winner Named

Jill Fisher Honored

FORSYTH - Ga. - The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) awarded Jill Fisher of the Cartersville Probation Office with the Cynthia Floyd Award at the Tenth Annual GDC Awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia.

"The Department is honored to recognize Jill for her commitment to providing treatment to the state's population of mental health offenders," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "Her dedication is commendable."

The award was created to honor Cynthia Floyd-Rolle for her exceptional humanitarian acts and personal sacrifice beyond the call of duty. Ms. Floyd-Rolle served as a Probation Officer for more than 15 years, until her tragic death in 2001.

Officer Fisher is receiving this award for her exceptional commitment to the supervision of mental health offenders. Officer Fisher developed a new referral system in collaboration with Georgia Highlands Mental Health to help recognize and assist people with mental health disorders in crisis. Her dedication to this cause has helped reduced the stigma of mental health offenders.

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 guests. Making the award presentation with the Commissioner were Assistant Commissioner Timothy C. Ward, Board of Corrections Vice Chair Rose Williams, and special guest speakers Mercer University Athletic Director Jim Cole and Mercer University Men's Basketball Head Coach Bob Hoffman.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
