New Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment Named

Derek Hill Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the promotion of Derek Hill to Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment at Hancock State Prison effective August 16, 2013. Hill will be responsible for supervising all areas of inmate activities to include education, counseling, chaplaincy, programs, medical, recreation, inmate records and visitation at the close security facility housing 1,266 male inmates located in Sparta.

"Derek is a dedicated employee with 20 years of service to the Department," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "His loyalty and knowledge will be of great value to Hancock State Prison."

Hill began his career with the Department in 1993 as a Correctional Officer at Hancock State Prison. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1997 and then to Lieutenant in 2007. During his time at Hancock, he came out of uniform to serve as a Counselor for a year. In 2012, he was promoted Security Chief, where he most recently served.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Thomas University and has completed Basic Management Training and Professional Management Program.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
