Contraband Arrests at Multiple State Prisons
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 1,261 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
On July 24 at Calhoun State Prison, a clear bag was located inside a cooler in the control room by security staff. After an investigation, Cadet Ashley Wimberly admitted to placing the bag in the cooler which contained 30 grams of cocaine and 230 grams of marijuana. Cadet Wimberly was arrested by Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.
On July 22 at Telfair State Prison, the Canine Unit was conducting searches in the parking lot at the facility when the canine alerted on a vehicle occupied by Officer Marquita Johnson and Officer Brittany Carswell. Officer Carswell consented to a search of her person where 181 grams of marijuana was located. Officer Johnson and Officer Carswell were arrested by Telfair County Sheriff's office and transported to Telfair County Jail.
On July 22 at Rutledge State Prison, Officer Breona Wright reported for work; however, she was unable to clear the metal detector. She consented to a search of her person where 2 packs of tobacco were located. Officer Wright was arrested by Muscogee County Sheriff's Office.
