Kevin Sprayberry Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. -- Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the promotion of Kevin Sprayberry as Warden of Calhoun State Prison effective January 1, 2015.  Sprayberry will be responsible for overseeing 267 staff members and 1,663 medium security inmates.

“Kevin has demonstrated he is ready to take on this new challenge,” said Commissioner Bryson.  “I am confident that his experience will be beneficial to the staff at Calhoun State Prison.”

A United States Air Force Veteran, Sprayberry was employed at Hays State Prison in 1994 as a Correctional Officer.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 2000 and to Lieutenant in 2006 at Hays. In 2012, he was promoted to Chief of Security at Walker State Prison, and returned to Hays in 2013 as a Unit Manager. In April 2014 he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Smith State Prison, where he currently serves.  

Sprayberry attended David Lipscomb University in 1983, until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1985. He is received his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice through California Coast University in 2014.  He is a graduate of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), Professional Management Program (PMP), Pre-Command and Effective Communication.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
