New Warden at Metro Reentry Prison

Steven Perkins Reassigned
FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the reassignment of Steven Perkins to Warden at Metro Reentry Prison effective December 1, 2017. As the Warden, Perkins will help to officially reopen the facility in early 2018 with approximately 450 medium security offenders; with plans to expand to 1,000 offenders. When reopened, Perkins will be responsible with overseeing 160 staff members and 450 male offenders.
“Steven’s nearly 30 years of experience will truly help to mold this facility into the reentry prison we are looking to establish,” said Commissioner Dozier. “His leadership will greatly benefit the staff and offenders.”
Perkins began his career with the Department at the Atlanta Diversion Center in 1989 as a Correctional Officer. In 1991, he was promoted to Sergeant at Larmore Probation Detention Center (PDC). He served as a Probation Officer, in 1998, at the center. Then later became a Counselor at Larmore PDC in 2001. In 2005, he transferred to Clayton Transitional Center. In 2010, Perkins was promoted to Assistant Superintendent at Helms Medical Facility and was then was promoted to Superintendent in 2011. He was promoted to Warden, in 2013, of the Metro Atlanta Complex, which includes the Atlanta, Metro, and Clayton Transitional Centers and Helms Medical Facility.
Perkins holds a Bachelor’s degree in Corrections from Langston University. He has completed Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Probation Officer Training (BPOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Intensive Substance Abuse Training, Mental Health Training, Georgia Gain Performance Management Training, Supervisor Development Training MD1 & MD2, Hostage negotiation and POST IT.
Metro plans to house offenders who, when sentenced, lived in five metro Atlanta counties to include Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett County. Offenders will be transferred to Metro within 24 to 36 months prior to their release.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
